A comparative study on midwifery : korea and sweden

Abstract
Purpose: To improve the quality in midwife education in Korea by comparing educational requirement, policy of Korea and Sweden.

Methods: An online search of the electronic databases CINAHL, OVID, and Google Scholar was conducted. Journal articles, government website from 2001 to 2016 were included.

Result: System and requirements of midwife education in Korea mandates license from Ministry of Health and Welfare after passing national exam based on Article 6 of medical law. However, in Sweden, one must acquire nursing license of more than 3 years at university level to proceed to clinical experience as a nurse for 2~3 years, and additionally meet training course from 1 year to 1 and a half year. Regarding continuing education, it is mandatory to meet more than 8 hours per year in Korea while it is needed every 6 month in Sweden. In Sweden, midwife are usually hired by hospital, and in charge of aiding labor in labor room, that of job scope is more expanded than in Korea.

Conclusion: Qualitatively prepared midwives would improve health of females in Korea by expanding pre and postpartum care. Second, it is required to clarify job description of midwife and obstetricians considering health risk of patients.
